Tech. Sgt. Jennifer Kuhl, 131st Mission Support Flight officer recruiter, recently volunteered to primarily recruit officers after she learned of the need for an expert to help individuals who are looking into becoming commissioned.

"We had a lot of people that were interested, but we never had a designated recruiter to go to," said Master Sgt. Louis Birkholz, 131st Mission Support Flight office supervisor. "Now we have Sergeant Kuhl as the subject matter expert for recruiting officers."

Sergeant Birkholz explained, you have to have at least a Bachelors degree to become an officer, but that doesn't automatically qualify you.

"There is a very high demand for physicians and engineers and these professional officer positions are hard to fill," said Sergeant Kuhl. "You have to already possess an educational background in that career; credentials, interviews, and statements of understanding are all part of assembling the officer package."

Sergeant Kuhl added, "I am the first place to start. I get the resume and transcripts and contact the commander if they would like to set up an interview."

Professional officers are typically not prior service, explained Sergeant Kuhl. For line officers there are job announcements and a wing base instruction, but for professionals we can put them in without advertising the positions.

However, "We want to make sure we give our unit members the opportunity to become officers and have the chance to advance," said Sergeant Kuhl. "They put their time in, proved themselves, showed good work ethic and all of our line officer selectees were internal candidates."

"Currently, I am accepting applications for line officers to put on a waiting list," added Sergeant Kuhl.

To find out more information about becoming an officer contact Tech. Sgt. Jennifer Kuhl, ext. 6304.

Sergeant Kuhl has been an enlisted recruiter for almost six years and has been an officer recruiter since February.

Sergeant Birkholz said, "She's done outstanding. She has the exact type of personality and demeanor to be an officer recruiter."
