231st CEF learns self defense

Lamber IAP --  Approximately 20 members from the 231st Civil Engineering Flight recently participated in a hand-to-hand self-defense class to prepare for an upcoming deployment.

The course was taught by Missouri Army National Guard 1st Lt. Andrew Myatt. He showed several scenarios stressing self-defense including being grabbed from behind and how to kill an attacker.

"We have heard of several instances where Airmen in theater were physically assaulted," said Lt. Col. William Morales, 231st CEF section chief, "We felt that knowing some hand-to-hand self-defense techniques would be invaluable in our deployment."

Lt. Col. Bruno Stopka, 231st CEF training section chief, explained, the class taught basic defense skills that can be used to build on with other training.

"It was good for engineers in the Missouri Army and Air National Guard to work together like this," added Col. John Keoshian, 231st CEF commander. "Since we will be supporting the Army in Afghanistan, this was a good opportunity for MoANG engineers to learn Army hand-to-hand defense skills."

The course was a one-time training that was coordinated with Lieutenant Myatt, but Colonel Morales added, "I think this is an excellent class for other members. The techniques that were shown could be used in any situation."

Colonel Morales added, "The purpose of the deployment is to provide engineering support to the Army for Operation Enduring Freedom."
