131st Bomb Wing Citizen-Airman is first responder

Missouri Air National Guard Senior Master Sgt. Sheldon G. Matthews serves as the 131st Bomb Wing first sergeant for wing staff at Whiteman Air Force Base, Missouri. Matthews was recently the first responder to a serious car accident October 11, 2014. “I credit everything I did and my reaction to the things I have learned in the military through Self Aid and Buddy Care and emergency response training,” Matthews said. “It’s not in me to just stand around and watch; I didn’t even think about it, I just went.” (U.S. Air National Guard photo by Tech. Civilian employers of 131st Bomb Wing members toured Whiteman Air Force Base and the 131st Bomb Wing Saturday, Oct. 4, 2014, to help gain understanding and appreciation for the work that Missouri Air National Guard Airmen do as part of their service commitment. Visit highlights included tours of a B-2 aircraft, munitions in the Weapons Load Trainer, the Oscar-1 missile alert facility museum, and a briefing from the Vice Wing Commander and an ESGR representative.

During the last holiday weekend of CDS, the Air Force lost two Airmen, one in a private aircraft mishap and the other in a motor vehicle-pedestrian mishap. ‘Gooney Bird,’ staple of WWII, Berlin Airlift, flown by Missouri Air National Guard

The 131st Missouri Air National Guard’s Gooney Bird is now displayed on the grounds of the St. Louis Museum of Transportation in St. Louis, Missouri. During its last flight, the Gooney Bird was flown wingless by a Kansas Army National Guard CH-54 Sky Crane on July 12, 1974.
