The 131st Tactical Fighter Wing C-47 Gooney Bird’s durability made it useful for transporting civilian passengers. In 1950, it was converted to a VIP transport plane, complete with carpet and a couch. It was primarily used to ferry Missouri’s governors, but one other VIP that flew on the Gooney Bird was President Harry Truman (shown center stage above the State of Missouri shield), whom the wing’s Chief Master Sgt. Wilbur Tackaberry (left) met alongside the 131st’s iconic Missouri Mule mascot, Banjo A. Burro, during Governor John Dalton’s inauguration Jan 9,1961. (131st Bomb Wing File photo/RELEASED).
